Information For College Stations
College stations were the backbone of the College Radio Network for many years, enabling CRN to reach a significant audience during that time. However, delivering a single channel of continuous content to an audience either with a transmitter or internet stream has gone from being a practice to being a limitation. On-demand content from the internet is far more convenient and is becoming the most popular means of delivering information and entertainment.
Because of this shift, we see the future of college radio being significantly different than it has been. The internet has leveled the playing field, and it is now possible for any station to reach an audience only limited in size by the popularity of the product and not by a coverage area. To promote this concept, CRN is changing our focus from producing and distributing content to helping college stations develop and promote their own content. There is a significant opportunity for stations that should be seized. Content has to come from somewhere, and radio stations create content.
If you have a production studio, separate from your air studio, you are in a great position to create content for podcasting! Why make everyone wait for your shows? You can still air them, but now they can be promoted as being accessible at whatever time and day on-air, and anytime on your station's web site!
Want to go a step further? One of the benefits of having a show on a radio station is that it is part of a continuous flow of content. Podcasting is convenient, but once the show is done, the player stops and the user has to make another selection. This problem has been solved at iNetRadio.
iNetRadio can be used to deliver podcast content, not only to a huge audience, but also placed within a format chosen by each iNetRadio user. HUH?!? Since iNetRadio allows each user to combine his or her favorite music with any other content, podcasts created by college stations can also be added. That's like being able to syndicate your shows on each one of your listener's favorite radio station! They choose the music, then add other content they like. Your content can be added the same way. Try it for yourself, it's free, and there's a demo player on the homepage at www.inetradio.com.
We're not suggesting that you give up on your radio broadcasts, but we are saying that college stations should put all their resources to work. The focus should be on creating and delivering content. How it is delivered should not be limited by traditions. You probably have questions about all this, and that's great.
We look forward to hearing from you!
